PINE KNOLL SHORE LINE W May 1977 Editors: Mary Doll Betty Hammon We thought you might like to know how promotional literature for the Caroli- nas read back in l682 — ’’The Heavens shine upon this famous Country the soveraign Hay of health; and has blest it with a serene Air, and a lofty Skie, that defends it from Noxious Infection; nor is there any known Dis temper, * .Morever its a salubrious Air to the sick, and diseased; and a gen erous retirement to necessitous, and abject Families; as also the assurance of such as study to be rich,” And here we are, all of us nearly three hundred years later, enjoying the ’’Serene Air and lofty Skie,” Our COMMISSIONERS conducted two public hearings, one April 6 on the proposed revisiojo: of the zoning ordinance. The revision provides for establishing a Community Appearance Commission charged with studying and evaluating the appearance of the to\^/n, working to preserve the terrain and the natural environment. Several permits must be secured before any new construction or clearing is begun. It x^jas suggested that a provision be added that a building permit expire within a set time. There is a new map of Pine Knoll Shores showing residential zones, recreational areas, and commercial areas. If you wish to look at this map, it is available at the Town Hall, The revised zoning ordinance was adopted by the Commissioners at their April 20 meeting. On April 13 a hearing was held on a proposed sign ordinance which makes no great changes but tightens up the present ordinance. Commissioner McCulley spoke of the problem of Town signs being bent and defaced. If any citizen sees this happening, he should report it immediately. These signs which are paid for by the To^wn are quite expensive. The commissioners have also accepted a tentative budget for 1977-78, This proposed budget will be available for inspection at the Town Hall through Hay l6, A public hearing on the budget will be held at the Marine Resources Center Kay 17 at 8:00 p,m. From PINE KNOLL ASSOCIATION; Board of Directors Meeting, April 12: The time has come to keep the gate at Ocean Park closed. After you have had a pleasant time there, please take a little extra time and close the gate as you leave. Thank you. The equipment for the shuffleboard at Sound Park may be picked up for play at the home of Dr, Milton Yaeck, Oakleaf Drive, V ' The Association has had l60‘ of bulkheading done at Hall Haven at this time. It is our hope that we will be able to continue and complete in the near future. The SECOND SATUicDAY IN JUNE is the ANNUAL MEETING OF THE PINE IGIOLL ASSOCIA- TXON, ^ All members will be notified of time and place, but v/e suggest that you write it on your calendars right now. As you observe the activity of bulkheading around the canals, tip your hat to Ed Crumley and his coimiiittee who have worked so hard and long and still ai*e on this project. Great Job! From PIKSCO’s secretary, Lucy Elmendorf, the nev;s that the follov/ing parks were transferred to PIKSCO on Karch 23: Garner Park (Sound Park), McNeill Inlet Park, Ocean Park, and an unnamed park off Salter Path Road which has not yet been developed, DID YOU SEE the editorial in the Aprii 25 Carteret News-Times based on our mayor’s letter to Governor Hunt and Emerald Isle’s Iiayor ^fatson’s plea to people visiting their town to help reduce litter? Litter along our island roadsides and on our beaches is a problem which disturbs all of us, and we need all the help we can get from state, county, and to^^ms, but most of all from every individual who lives on or visits our island, GARDSNCLUB - As many of you read in the Carteret News-TImes, our PKS Garden Club did an outstanding job when it was host club to seven nearby garden clubs which came for lunch, displays, and tours of the Marine Center on Monday, April lo, Audrey Hoffmeyer and Vivian Macdonald demonstrated ilov/er arrangments, Louise Jolitz and Marion Archibald and their committee prepared and served lunch. At the business meeting, the follov/ing officers were elected for the 1977-78 term: Mrs, V/illiam Macdonald, President; Mrs, Kenneth Hoffmeyer, Vice-President; Mrs, Richard Mansfield, Recording Secre tary; Mrs, Arthur Browne, Corresponding Secretary; Mrs, Elwood Ratliffe, Treasurer; and Mrs. Kenneth Knight, Project Chairman, The new officers ^11 be installed at the annual meeting to be held at the Ramada Inn on May 23* Issue ^9 NEWCOMERS TAKE NOTE: Don»t go crashing through the underbrush in your shorts the chigger will consider you a tasty bite, and you will itch like mad.
